What SeniorMatch is

SeniorMatch has been operating since 2003 — longer than most senior dating platforms. It is part of the SuccessfulMatch network, which also runs other niche dating sites. The minimum age to join is 40, and in practice the active membership skews closer to 50 and above.

The platform has approximately 2.1 million registered members with around 6,000 active daily. Members exchange over 1.6 million messages per month. Thirty-six thousand couples in the US, UK, Australia, and elsewhere report having met through the platform.

The platform is available as a website and as an app on both iPhone and Android. The two interfaces work differently — more on that in the how it works section.

75%
Of female SeniorMatch users say their goal is a serious relationship rather than casual dating. From SeniorMatch's own survey of 548 members, February 2025.

Free vs paid — what you actually get

This is worth explaining clearly because most reviews gloss over it. SeniorMatch's free membership is more generous than most senior dating platforms — but it still has real limits.

Free membership

  • Browse profiles
  • Search by age, gender, location
  • Send winks (up to 50/day)
  • Reply to messages from paid members
  • Use the Flame swipe interface
  • Read the community blog and forums
  • Initiate messages (paid only)
  • Advanced search filters
  • See who viewed your profile
  • Live customer support

Paid membership (Premium)

  • Everything in the free plan
  • Initiate messages with any member
  • Filter by ethnicity, religion, ZIP code
  • See who viewed or liked your profile
  • See when members were last active
  • Live 24/7 customer support
  • Change your username
  • Optional: Personal Account Manager

Practical tip: Because free members can reply to messages from paid members, you can get a feel for the platform without paying. If a paid member messages you first, you can respond and have a full conversation — the restriction is only on initiating contact.

Safety features

This is where SeniorMatch genuinely stands out from every other senior dating platform we have reviewed.

Live video verification

When you sign up, SeniorMatch requires you to submit a short video of yourself. A moderation team reviews this video manually to confirm that your face matches your uploaded profile photos.

No other senior dating platform we tested does this. OurTime and SilverSingles use photo review processes, but not live video confirmation. This makes it significantly harder to create a fake profile using someone else's photos — which is one of the most common methods romance scammers use.

AARP's independent review of SeniorMatch confirmed this feature and noted that 75% of SeniorMatch users they surveyed said they chose the platform specifically because of its safety reputation.

What the verification does not prevent

Video verification confirms that a person's face matches their photos. It does not verify that the information in their profile is accurate — their name, occupation, or location can still be fabricated. Some users do report encountering suspicious profiles even after signing up.

Our advice on this is consistent regardless of platform: read our romance scam warning signs guide before you start. Knowing the patterns is more reliable than trusting any platform's verification.

How it works day to day

Signing up

You can register with an email address or through Facebook. The sign-up process asks for basic information — gender, age, location, and a brief profile description — and requires you to upload a photo immediately. Your photo goes through approval before it appears publicly.

AARP's testers gave SeniorMatch a perfect score for sign-up ease. The process is straightforward and does not require a long questionnaire before you can start browsing.

Two ways to browse: Flame and Discover

SeniorMatch offers two interfaces:

  • Flame is a swipe-style format — similar to how Tinder works. You see one profile at a time and indicate interest by swiping or clicking. This is faster and suits people who want to make quick decisions.
  • Discover is the traditional browsing format — you see a grid of profiles and can click through to read each one. This gives you more control and suits people who prefer to read profiles carefully before deciding.

You can switch between the two whenever you like. Most women over 50 who are new to dating apps find Discover more intuitive.

Community features

Beyond messaging, SeniorMatch has a member blog, discussion forums, and local event listings. These give you ways to engage with the community and get a sense of the membership before committing to a paid plan. The blog-to-bonus program lets you earn free premium time by writing articles or referring new members.

Pricing in full

SeniorMatch's pricing is mid-range for senior dating platforms — more expensive than OurTime on a month-by-month basis, but cheaper than SilverSingles and substantially cheaper than eHarmony.

Plan Per month Total billed Auto-renews?
1 month $29.95 $29.95 Yes
3 months $19.98 $59.95 No
6 months Best value $15.99 $95.95 No
Important: iOS vs website pricing

Subscribing through the iPhone app costs approximately $5 more per month than subscribing through the website — the difference is Apple's App Store processing fee.

If you plan to use SeniorMatch on your phone, still subscribe through seniormatch.com in your phone's browser, not through the App Store. You can then log in to the app with your account.

Is it worth paying?

The free membership is genuinely usable for getting a feel for the platform. If you are just browsing to see whether the membership quality looks right for you, there is no reason to pay immediately.

To actually start conversations, you need to pay. If you decide to try a subscription, the three-month plan is a reasonable starting commitment — it is enough time to know whether the platform is working for you without the larger upfront cost of six months.

The two complaints we hear most

Most review sites only tell you what works well. Here are the two things that genuinely frustrate SeniorMatch users, based on complaints across multiple review platforms.

Complaint 1: The minimum match distance is 100 miles

SeniorMatch does not let you set a match distance below 100 miles. If you live in a major city, this is fine — there will be plenty of local members within that radius. If you live in a smaller town or rural area, you may find that most of your suggested matches are hours away.

Multiple users across review platforms mention opening ten pages of matches and finding only a handful within a practical driving distance. This is a real limitation and worth factoring in if you are not in or near a city.

Bottom line: If you live in or near a city, this likely will not be a problem. If you are in a rural area, OurTime's larger member base may serve you better.

Complaint 2: Cancelling a subscription can be difficult

This is the most common complaint about SeniorMatch across PissedConsumer, Trustpilot, and ComplaintsBoard. Users report difficulty cancelling, unexpected charges after cancellation requests, and unresponsive customer service during the process.

To be fair: the three-month and six-month plans do not auto-renew. The auto-renewal issue applies mainly to the one-month plan. Even so, this is worth knowing.

How to protect yourself: If you sign up on the one-month plan, set a calendar reminder a few days before your renewal date. Cancel through your account settings or by emailing support@seniormatch.com. If you have trouble, contact your bank or credit card company directly.

Who SeniorMatch is right for

SeniorMatch is a good fit if you…

  • Live in or near a city. The 100-mile minimum distance works in your favour — you will have a reasonable local member pool.
  • Want the safest platform available. The live video verification is a genuine advantage over every other senior-specific platform.
  • Are looking for a serious relationship. 75% of female members say they want a committed partnership — the membership skews toward serious intent.
  • Want to browse before paying. The free membership is more functional than most — you can get a real sense of the membership quality before committing any money.
  • Are new to dating apps. The sign-up process is simple and the Discover interface does not require prior app experience to navigate.

SeniorMatch may not be right if you…

  • Are in a rural or less-populated area. The 100-mile minimum combined with a smaller overall member base than OurTime may leave you with few local options.
  • Want personality-based matching. SeniorMatch does not use a compatibility questionnaire. You browse and decide — if you prefer the platform to curate matches for you, SilverSingles does this.
  • Only want to try for one month. The one-month plan auto-renews and has generated the most complaints. If budget or commitment is a concern, the three-month plan is the safer starting point.
  • Are looking for casual dating or friendship only. The membership leans toward serious relationships. OurTime has a broader range of intentions.

Common questions

SeniorMatch has a free membership that lets you browse profiles, search by age, gender and location, send winks, and reply to messages from paid members. To initiate messages yourself and access advanced filters, you need a paid subscription starting at $15.99/month on the six-month plan.

Go to your account settings and find the subscription or membership section. You can also email support@seniormatch.com. The one-month plan auto-renews, so cancel before the renewal date. Three and six-month plans do not auto-renew. If you have difficulty cancelling, contact your bank or credit card company to block further charges.

Yes. SeniorMatch has members in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and other countries. The largest member base is in the US. Outside major cities in the US, the local member pool may be limited.

Yes — the SeniorMatch app is available on both iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play). The app works the same as the website. If you plan to subscribe, do so through the website rather than the App Store — the website price is approximately $5/month lower due to Apple's processing fee.

The main differences: SeniorMatch has stronger safety verification and lower pricing. SilverSingles uses a personality test to suggest matches for you, while SeniorMatch has you browse yourself. SilverSingles has more complaints about user experience (1.2 stars on Consumer Affairs vs SeniorMatch's 2.1). Both have similar member base sizes. For most women starting out, SeniorMatch is the better choice.

Our final verdict

SeniorMatch is not perfect — the 100-mile minimum distance is a real limitation if you are not near a city, and the cancellation complaints are worth taking seriously.

But for women over 50 who want to date safely and seriously, it is the best-balanced option available. The live video verification is a genuine industry differentiator. The pricing is reasonable. The free membership lets you see what you are getting into before paying anything.

If you are in an urban or suburban area and want a platform with real safety credentials and a serious membership, SeniorMatch is where we would suggest starting.
